I find
my life as a member of the DeSales Crossings Community exciting because our
community mission has allowed me to collaborate with my brothers as well as
other religious and lay people to try to impact to poor and disadvantaged in the
Walnut Hills neighborhood. Flowing from our mission, I minister at Mercy
Connections, am on the Purcell Marian school board, and actively participate in
the St. Francis DeSales parish as a lector and eucharistic minister. |
These activities also allow me to build a faith
community, not only with my brothers but also with other religious and lay
people in DeSales Crossings. It is nice to
hear Sr. Sally Sherman (director of Mercy Connections) conclude our faith
sharing each day with a prayer through the intercession of Sister Catherine
McCauley and Father Chaminade. I find the faith sharing that we do in community
several times a week has enlivened and enriched my personal faith life and has
helped me share it with the people that touch my life each day. Finally, our
efforts at Marianist hospitality have brought together many of the people I
minister to and work with on a regular basis, and this is very energizing for
me.
Originally, I was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and grew up in Evanston. After going
to grade school at St. Mark’s, I attended Purcell High School, graduating in
1959. During my time at Purcell I was very attracted to the lifestyle and
educational ministry of Marianists. So, decided to enter the order after high
school.
I professed first vows in 1960 and final vows in 1964. I finished studying for
my B.S. degree in Chemistry at the University of Dayton in 1964 and began
teaching at North Catholic High School in Pittsburgh. After a wonderful year
there, I was assigned to Chaminade High School in Dayton, Ohio, where I taught
Chemistry, Math, Physical Science, and eventually Computer Science for 24 years.
After 4 summers of study, I earned my Masters degree in Chemistry from Purdue
University in 1972.
In 1973 I was asked to be co-director of the merger of Chaminade with Julienne
High School. Following the merger, I became Director of Student Services for 3
years. In the middle of my stay at Chaminade-Julienne, I was asked to be
vocation director for the Marianists, which I did from 1979 to 1985.
I then studied computer science for 2 years at the University of Dayton and Ohio
State University, and returned to Chaminade-Julienne to teach and develop the
computer science program. In 1998 I responded to a movement of the Spirit to
join my Marianist brothers at the DeSales Crossings community in Walnut Hills
and teach computer skills to the underserved and marginal adults at Mercy
Connections. This ministry has been and still is an exciting part of my life. |
