The
Marianist Charism was first seen during my days at Cathedral with my four
brothers and sisters. The friendliness and professionalism of the Marianists was
very attractive so I entered in the summer of 1965 following graduation.
After completing my BS in education degree at the University of Dayton, |
I taught Social Studies at Cathedral Latin School
for five years and then served as Dean of Discipline for three years and was
Principal for two years before the school closed in 1979. In 1980, I was
Principal/Manager of a secondary school in Dublin, Ireland, St. Laurence
College. I returned to Cleveland in 1985 to be Dean of Academics at St Joseph
High School for one year and then was appointed Principal at Moeller High School
in Cincinnati where I served for five years. In 1991 I was appointed Director of
Education/Assistant Provincial for the Cincinnati Province of the Society of
Mary, headquartered in Dayton, Ohio. Six years later I became Provincial, a
position I held until the Province merged with three others in 2002. Following a
sabbatical at Wellsprings in upstate New York, I began a new ministry as
Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati in January 2003.
The major elements of Marianist life that give me energy are the
living and sharing ministry with the brothers I live with in the community. The
support given and received for a sustained prayer life is very important in
one’s growth in knowing, following and proclaiming Jesus Christ as Lord. Lastly,
the energy received from prayer and living together supports the ministry
outward into the community in sharing our Marianist Charism with others.
Three major commitments outside of being a member of the DeSales
Crossings Marianist Community and being Superintendent that I enjoy the most
are: My participation as a member of the University of Dayton’s Board of
Trustees; serving as a member of the Provincial Chapter of the Province of the
United States and my participation in the Micah Marianist Community, a group of
men and women from the Society of Mary, the Daughters of Mary and Lay Marianists
who gather to support each other and provide service to others. |
